In the war to fight obesity, there is a new medication in the making, this is currently being called MK-0364 or Taranabant. Taranabant is a product being developed by Merck and is still in trial stages so it will not potentially be on the market for sometime yet. For those who care, it is a cannabinoid-1 (CB-1) receptor inverse agonist. Earlier this month (June) Acomplia® or Rimonabant was put on hold by the FDA for approval in the USA. Merck hopes that the stage 3 trials proves to be successful in the FDA's opinion and that this medication can start to be prescribed for those suffering from obesity. So far it is being said that Taranabant most likely has fewer side effects than many other weight loss medications on the market, but nothing official yet. Merck hopes to bring this drug before the FDA sometime next year. So in the mean time more testing will be done to determine its overall effectiveness and risks involved with it, as with any medication.
Since obesity is such a huge problem affecting millions around the world, primarily in developed countries. There are other big pharma companies working towards other medications. Pfizer currently is working on one known only as CP-945598. This obviously will receive a common name if proceedings go through with the drug. But for now it is simply known as such. There are most likely other substances being tested by other companies as well, just nothing on the news of them as such. Regardless all medications have to go through a well investigation by the FDA before hitting any USA market.
Obesity problems around developed nations have continues to grow at a rather frightening pace. Many claim this is due to all the "conveniences" that society has now, including all the TV and other sedentary past times that society is ever so taking part in. Exercise is often being overlooked and the food on average many consume is very high in fats and sugars. All of this can easily lead to nations ever increasing their weight.

Currently Taranabant is Not for Sale Anywhere as it is still being tested.
