Contrave is the other medication consisting of the mixing of two different drugs. Much like Qnexa, Contrave is actually not a new drug at all but the trademark name given to the special combination of Bupropion and Naltrexone. Interestingly Bupropion is most often used to fight depression as an atypical treatment, most often antidepressants are SSRI's (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) Bupropion is also used to help smokers quit. Bupropion has also been used off label to help people to lose weight. Naltrexone is used to help people who are addicted to drugs and alcohol quit. So this begs the question that if Contrave is approved, would it be more likely to be used to help someone lose weight if they are also struggling with alcohol, drug addition or either smoke or are depressed? Perhaps, as recent studies have shown that Contrave has helped overweight people with depression as well as lose weight.
Contrave will have to wait until December 7th 2010 to go before an FDA advisory panel to hear what they have to say about it. At this meeting the advisory board will discuss and vote on whether or not the FDA should approve it on the tentative date of January 31st, 2011. The FDA usually takes the recommendations from this advisory board on whether or not they approve it. In speculating whether or not
Contrave gets the thumbs up, some are speculating what the FDA's decision is on Qnexa, or just what exactly their concerns are about it if they decide to reject. Qnexa and Contrave are obviously different products and mixtures entirely but the analysis we hear on Qnexa could give great insight into Contrave. Obviously one could be passed and not the other, or they both pass or they both fail. This is equally the case with Lorcaserin, the third obesity medication that has been submitted to the FDA. But Lorcaserin's fate will be discussed at the proposed FDA advisory committee on September 16th 2010, only to then have the ultimate decision made tentatively of October 22nd 2010.
Currently the stocks of each company, OREX (Orexigen . Contrave), VVUS (Vivus Inc . Qnexa), and ARNA (Arena .
Lorcaserin) are the topic of much debate as people try to research the chances of each medication being approved and invest likewise. But let the truth be known, there is no way to determine if the board will recommend the approval of a drug or the disapproval and then whether or not the FDA will agree and proceed with that recommendation. Some doctors will argue for and some against, If the right combination of doctors vote either way, then the outcome is reflected in such.
